Reconsideration Process

COCISD Reconsideration Process

The purpose of the COCISD library collection is to build a quality collection that supports and enriches the curriculum.

The ALA (American Library Association) Library Bill of Rights and the Freedom To Read Statement provide the appropriate setting for developing a library collection. COCISD Board Policy EF(LOCAL) defines the role of the librarian for selecting resources to implement the district's educational program. The state requirements for instructional materials are outlined in COCISD Board Policy EFA(LEGAL). Resources for selection are in accordance with ALA's Guidance on Selection Criteria.

Reconsideration of Material

Occasional objections to materials may be made despite the quality of the selection process. A Request for Reconsideration of Materials form may be downloaded or requested from the district librarian. This form shall be completed in its entirety and signed and dated by the complainant and submitted to the campus principal. Upon receipt of the request, the principal shall appoint a reconsideration committee. All members of the committee must review the materials and make a decision on the challenge. The committee shall prepare a written report and it is then submitted to the principal, superintendent or designee, and complainant.

The complainant may appeal the decision in accordance with COCISD Complaint Procedures.
